Midyear Sales Numbers

2012 midyear U.S. music sales numbers revealed some positive news. According to Nielsen SoundScan, digital album and digital single sales were up 14 percent and 6 percent respectively at July 1. Adele’s “21” and Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” are midyear’s bestselling album and digital song respectively – selling 3.7 million and 5.5 million. Impressively, Gotye’s feat marks the first time a digital song has sold five million in a calendar year’s first six months! At midyear, 47 digital tracks sold more than one million copies. 15 of those songs also sold two million downloads, six sold three million, three topped four million, and two sold five million copies (Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” (featuring Kimbra) and Fun.’s “We Are Young.”
